Heath runs along the east shore of Lake Ray Hubbard, with lakefront homes and big lots south of the Rockwall line. Buffalo Creek and its golf course sit near the middle of town, and FM 740 runs the length of the city past most of the neighborhoods.

The City of Heath building department issues residential permits. Most of Heath is HOA subdivisions and large-lot neighborhoods, and HOA approval usually comes before the city permit. Outside city limits, Rockwall County has little or no residential permitting.
